Way Back Whensday

This week we're looking back to late Summer of 2004. I was just getting ready to move away from home and start college all the way in San Diego. It may as well have been the moon, it seemed so far away. (HA! Now we live in a different time zone... Texas puts things into perspective once again.)

Getting back to the photo...

My wonderful friends organized a going away dinner for me at Olive Garden. Endless soup and salad. Please and Thank You!  Needless to say, we had a fabulous time!

Coincidentally, this week is one of my best friend in the whole world's birthdays...

The lovely Mrs. V

ps - How has she not aged a day in the 10 years we've been friends?!

Love you V! Hope you have the best birthday ever!

Way Back Whensday

7 words for y'all:

"Is this chicken, or is this fish?"

This week we're looking back at the Summer of 2004 when Newlyweds was my favorite show and Nick and Jessica were the it couple.

I won tickets on the radio to see Miss Simpson at the fair and my best friend Ashley, my mom, and I all attended the concert.

Ryan Cabrera was the opening act
(remember, he dated Ashlee Simpson way back when.)

Sadly, he is definitely more remembered for his outrageous hair than anything else.

The concert was alright. Free's free

The real highlight was seeing Nick :)

Guilty Pleasure: I still have all the seasons of newlyweds on dvd
and I would totally watch them again!

This week

Texas Blue Bonnets made their debut.

Spring Break ended. Boo hoo hoo.

I started a new long term subbing job teaching spec-ed math.

*Note to self:  When the kids say "I'm so special!" Don't say "Yeah, special... ed!"
That's not funny anymore.

Andrew caught a cold.
And picked up a new talent... involuntary, obnoxious snoring.

I in turn picked up a new hobby...
voluntarily hitting said snorer in the face with a pillow.

Just when I thought my sleep couldn't get any more interrupted, a tornado touched down dangerously close to our house, prompting me to grab all my most prized possessions and cram them, maddie, myself, and andrew in our teeny bathroom under the stairs until the storm passed.
Scary!!!
{Read about the tornado here}

Wondering what other gems this week will bring...

Oy Vey is it really only Tuesday?!

Happy St Patrick's Day

Mr. Hoag Goes to Washington

I'm so excited I got my Hoagie-Bear back today :)

He had a great couple of days in DC and brought back some photos to share...

Look how gorgeous those cherry blossoms are!
I begged him to bring some back for me,
but he mumbled something about luggage restrictions and took pictures instead.
Nice hiking trails around Jefferson's pad (Monticello)

And of course, as with any Hoag vacation, there was food involved:

There was also an entire day spent researching Argentine translations of American authors at the University of Virginia Library.

Yeah, I could probably pass on that part of the trip, but I definitely want to go back next time!

so what if i'm a packrat!

It's Spring Break and for some that means spring cleaning.  Just to be clear, I do not consider myself to be included in that "some."  However, lately I've been thinking that I have too much stuff; too much clutter.  For example, I know it's not "normal" to  have 4 christmas trees, 2 wedding dresses, 12459 pairs of shoes, and so on.  It's no secret that I need to get rid of stuff.  But today I stumbled upon a box that convinced me to never get rid of another thing, ever again... My box of cards.

Inside this box (and a few other, ok 5 other boxes) are all of the wedding invitations & cards, birthday cards, letters, wedding programs, baby shower invites and thank yous, christmas pictures, post cards, pen pal letters from becky since we were 7 years old, broadway ticket stubs, graduation programs, and paper keepsakes I have ever gotten.  Yes, I do in fact save EVERYTHING!!!

And I have thought about photographing each one and backing up the pictures digitally to save some space (because 5 boxes is a lot) but there is something oh so special about opening these cards and going back in time...

like this one from my sweet cousin Ivory:

How presh is that?  This card was in my very first care package when I moved away to college in 2004 and adorned my desk that whole school year.  (Thank goodness it was pink and matched the decor :)  And a photograph just doesn't capture all that. Some things you just have to hold in your hands to appreciate.

In another box of cards and keepsakes, I found all of my wedding planning calendars, checklists, books, and receipts.  How fun is that?!!!  Our wedding was 5 years ago this July, so I'm just starting to forget a lot of the little details of the planning and organizing that went into that best day of my life. Like the ever-changing budget (that ultimately went out the window), switching center piece ideas every week and saving Michael's coupons to buy tulle and vases, all the wedding guest books we bought and couldn't seem to find on the day of, picking out our wedding rings at a pawn shop in Vegas, reserving everything for July 14 and then moving the date to July 7 a few months before the big day. There was A LOT that went into our wedding! {Luckily my mom and aunt nessie did everything so all I had to do was smile for the camera and eat fondue... and i did!}

I forgot all of that... until I found all of this stuff:

In conclusion, I have decided that it is a good idea to keep everything (as well as photograph and back it up on a terabyte) as long as you pull it out and look through it every once in a while.

Now back to NOT spring cleaning!

Way Back Whensday

This week we're looking back at Saint Patrick's Day past. The year was 2006.

I was living on campus at PLNU

So we headed over to "cat" house
{the house Andrew and Jordan rented on Catalina Place}
where we could *ahem* celebrate Patty's Day properly

Drew was there

Ben and Will busted out some moves

Kautzer was there too, this was his pre-patty's irish jig

Jay sang some tunes
Andrew needed a haircut.

And now, for your viewing pleasure...
I bring to you: St. Patrick's Day in song

Let it be known that I rarely partook in the drunken debauchery.
But I always documented it :)

If you asked me

I'd tell you I miss this beach everyday {and of course my family that lives there too}

If you asked me, I'd tell you that chocolate makes me happy.

Andrew left for Washington, DC this morning and I will be eating
A LOT of chocolate while he is gone.
(Don't worry Hoagie-Bear, I'll save you some reece's cups!)

If you asked me, I'd tell you that I've been reading through Psalms and God keeps bringing me back to Psalm 139, specifically these verses:

5 You go before me and follow me.
You place your hand of blessing on my head.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too great for me to understand!

I sometimes always get overwhelmed trying to figure out why some things work out the way they do or don't, and am left puzzled.  God is so good to remind me that I can't possibly understand those things, nor do I need to. He is always with us, protecting us. That is all we need to know when life gets confusing, and it's still incomprehensible.

If you asked me, I'd tell you spring cleaning sounds about as appealing as a root canal.

Not happening anytime soon.

If you asked me, I'd tell you that today is probably going to be one of those resolution #18  days where I spend the whole day in my pajamas. And that is perfectly ok :)

Spring Break

Spring Break is officially here and not a minute too soon!

Andrew is packing for DC (he leaves bright and early Tuesday morning.)

I have already made shopping and movie dates with the girls to keep me plenty occupied til he returns.

Pretty sure I have a week's worth of chores to catch up on as well.
Wait, is lent still happening?  I think this year I'm giving up housework for lent. BooYa!!!

Oh, healthy eating update: fell off that wagon. End of story.

Happy Spring Break!!!

Way Back Whensday

March is a special month for us Hoags.  This Friday marks mine and Andrew's 11th anniversary as a couple.

Here are some pictures of us celebrating our 5 year anniversary in 2006 with a fun weekend in Monterey.

Even though it got so cold that it snowed, we still had a great time celebrating one of our favorite anniversaries!
