Visitors Welcome

Our good friends from Point Loma (currently residing in Houston) Brenden and Carissa came to visit over the weekend. We are so happy we got to see them because they had an even crazier Summer than we did… quick recap: they moved back to the states from Canada and spent a month travelling around South America, then drove out to Houston for Carissa to start a PhD program at Rice just last week. Congratulations Dr. Carissa!!!

While they were here, we checked out the Alamo and river walk, did some shopping at Rim and La Cantera, ate bbq at Rudy’s, burritos at Free Bird, Mongolian bbq at Genghis Grill, and finally got our internet installed. (Sorry you had to be here for that 2 day ordeal!)  That's strike 1 for Time Warner Cable.
Maddie Bear found a new friend!

Rudy's BBQ - self proclaimed worst BBQ in Texas, we disagree.

Shopping at TJ Maxx Home Goods. I may have converted them :)

Our new favorite store. All you San Diegans best be stoked,
you're getting one on Rosecrans!

The boys begged and begged to get a makeover at Sephora.

Getting comfy at Z Gallerie

It is so nice to have our socal buddies living so close. FYI in Texas, a 3 and ½ hour drive is close. Plans are in the works for a winter trip to New Orleans (8 hours from San Antonio, also close by TX standards.) Give me a heads up if you want to join us!

Back to School

8th grade Pre-Algebra classroom for my long term subbing assignment.
I survived the first week of school!
8th grade algebra hasn’t changed much in the last 13 years, nor have I so it’s shaping up to be a fun 6 weeks. I definitely have my work cut out for me though. 193 students and 8 periods each day might be more than I bargained for. Forget learning all the students’ names, at this point I just refer to them as “hey you” and “no, not you, the one next to you.” I’ll work on differentiating students next week.

Another challenge to teaching at Vale Middle School is that it is directly across the street from Sea World. For reals… check out the view from my classroom window.
Every 30 seconds I hear the happy screams of the roller coaster riders.
By the end of 8th period I’m happily screaming right along with them :)
You can see that if I make one wrong turn on the way to school, I’m literally in the splash zone at the Shamu show. Hmm. Kind of enticing in this 110 degree heat. Btw we’re at over 50 some odd days in a row over 100 here. (Ignore the fact that for 42 of those days we were west coasting it.) Luckily my mom and dad are coming to visit next weekend and they always bring the chilly Pismo weather with them. {This just in: Andrew checked the weather report and the day they arrive we’re due for shattered thunderstorms.} Woo Hoooo! Oh, make that “scattered” thunderstorms. Not nearly as exciting. No matter, my mom and dad are coming to visit! Yay!!!

Mahalo Maui Aloha Alamo

I heart Hawaii. Maui was the bomb dot com and we had so much fun celebrating Kathryn's 60th Birthday!

Andrew and I on a typical Friday afternoon

Happy Birthday Kathryn!

Andrew sporting snorkel gear and mistakenly thinking he's working it.

Watching the sunrise at Haleakala

Freezing my bum off at Haleakala

Andrew and his dad on the road to Hana

Another waterfall on the road to Hana.

Andrew and his sister singing karaoke in Lahaina.
Maui may not be ready for the vocal explosion that was these two singing
Smashing Pumpkin's "Bullet with Butterfly Wings"
Stick with a tacky country song next time :)

Of course, lots of jumping pictures. This one at Black Sand Beach.

Rae and Leah discover the only thing better than krispy kreme doughnuts are
coconut creme krispy kremes in Hawaii.

Andrew, meet Lava Flow. And a beautiful friendship was formed.
So anyway, we're back.  Andrew begins his second year of classes at UTSA next week and I will be covering an 8th grade algebra class for 6 weeks. Vacation time is over and reality is cruel... Practicing my introduction for class on Monday: "Welcome to 8th grade. You're gonna hate it."

Hoagies in Hawaii

Summer is ending with one final magnificent vacation to end vacations... MAUI!!! We're celebrating Andrew's mom's 60th Birthday in style... Island style :) Aloha mai tais, lava flows, snorkelling, and hiking up beautiful waterfalls.

If you squint real hard, you can almost see us swimming with the dolphins.
What? You mean not everyone is in a perpetual state of vacation? Just us? Oh the fun of being NINKS (no income, no kids!)
