Healthy Eating or Bust

Andrew and I eat pretty healthy... or so I thought, until I started a mental food log to bust bad food habits and hopefully bust my bubble butt in the process.  I will spare you the boring details, but pop tarts, pizza, and potato chips are all repeat offenders and have left me busting out of my clothes. Boo :(

So, if January was all about eating ice cream and February was all about visitors and eating out, March needs to be about eating healthy and exercising (or busting a move, as I like to call it.)

Where to begin?...

Initially I thought about the vegetarian approach, not just for the health reasons, but because I love animals and how can you eat something that you love? (Except of course, in the case of bacon. joking :)  But let's get real here, I live in Texas: bbq capital of the world and I'm not quite ready to go completely vegetarian just yet. However, I will cut out all beef and pork products, and that's a good start. (shh, don't tell - they might revoke my Texas citizenship)

I'm not very good at crazy dietary restrictions, so starting out I will stick to 3 simple rules:
1. Reduce the amount of icky processed foods I eat
2. Eat more fruits and vegetables
3. No sugar (that will be the toughest... bye bye lucky charms)

Where to end?...

Cabo San Lucas' white sand beaches are fast approaching in May, and my mom just got a fancy canon DSLR camera that takes a thousand pics a minute, which means there will be a thousand chubby beach pictures of me. Bleh. I can see the FB album now "brennie (breached) at the beach" flashback to the nickname "brenda whale" ugh.  So May is my self imposed deadline to bust some lbs.  In addition to boring better eating, I will have to incorporate some kind of exercising too. But, on a scale of 1 to 10, exercise makes me want to throw up.  I'll leave it at that.

To my faithful followers (all 4 of you :)  Don't worry, Hoags & Kisses is a happy place full of mostly silly things and the current events in our lives. It is not about to become completely corrupted by boring posts about healthnut stuff. {minus this post, obvi.} I just wanted you to know why I'm going to be so cranky for the next 8 or so weeks. {tummy grumbles}

Here's to clean eating...
starting tomorrow!

Red Carpet Recap

Lets take a look at some red carpet hits and misses from the Oscars last weekend.

First my FAVORITE look of the evening...

I normally don't like the look of waist ruffles (or shirt-skirts as I call them) on an evening gown, but with a diamond bow adornment it's the perfect combination of feminine frill. The color is unusual, Williams called it coral, but Vuitton calls it burnt orange. I'm more a fan of coral, I don't like to wear "burnt" anything! The only modification this glam look needs is to switch out the pink clutch for a more sophisticated silver one. (Can't believe I said that! Don't worry, I still love pink!!!)

These were pretty too...

Next: the looks I liked but didn't love.

Did you see this funny link about Angelina's leg? Made me giggle!

And now for the worst...

Oy vey so many fashion flops!!!  The tacky black hefty garbage bag-esque dresses were not even worthy of a Halloween costume or Vegas, yet alone the red carpet.  The gold dresses were ill fitting and looked like cheap replicas of the oscar trophy (sorry Meryl, you're still my favorite!)  Sandra is one of the most beautiful actresses, but has made some major fashion flops as of late. Unfortunately this dress was no different.  I might get some disagreement on Cameron Diaz's dress; most critics put her on the best dressed list. But I still think it's hideous... hair and makeup disaster, the color is bleh, and the bottom looks shredded.  The white straight jacket dress is just plain boring.

And we'll end on a highnote...

If you asked me

I'd tell you that moving across the country was really, really hard, but the last year and a half in San Antonio has been the best of the 11 years that Andrew and I have spent together.
{Coincidentally that is the same amount of time that we've had our sweet little maddie bear}

If you asked me,  I'd tell you that girl scout samoas cookies are absolutely delicious. Yes, that's me confessing to eating the whole box. {Don't judge, the boxes are small}

If you asked me, I'd tell you that I worked my butt off getting my teaching credential only to discover that I like subbing wayyy more.

If you asked me, I'd tell you that Isaiah had it right: "You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on you because he trusts in you."
Only Heavenly Father can provide peace; (not shopping, not cookies)

If you asked me, I'd tell you that I really want to have a baby, but the timing just isn't right. I suppose there's never a convenient time for such a life-changer. Maybe next year.

If you asked me, I'd tell you that I have the cutest puppy in the world, even if I gave her a stupid haircut.

This Week

University of Virginia

Andrew made all his travel arrangements for Washington, D.C. over Spring Break. Me and Maddie are going to sit this trip out because I was there recently with my mom, and Andrew will be spending a lot of time at the library doing research and meeting with professors at UVA (above).

But don't feel too bad for me...

I got invited to go to Cabo San Lucas with the girls for a week in May! My mom, Lorie, and I are going to have so much fun! Remember our trip to Cancun? ::YAY!!!::

I went the whole month without shopping (except for Costco, HEB and a couple little oopsies) It actually wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. This is a pretty big deal because I drive right by 2 decent Ross stores, Marshalls, and a super Target everyday on my way home.
Talk about restraint!

I beat everyone at "words with friends." Pretty soon they're going to call it "words with enemies" :)  Whatever! Undefeated champion right here!!!

We watched the movie, "My Week With Marilyn" and agree that Michelle Williams is far and away the most successful former teen star of the Dawson's Creek cast.
(James Van Der WHO?)

Maddie got a haircut... I'm sorry MB, but I promise it will grow back!

I also crossed off some more resolutions:

 Grow hair, grow!!!

So long February!

Hello March and Spring Break.

Can you please come faster?!!!

Here's what we've been listening to lately...

You can listen to a few of them here

First off, the new Florence + the Machine album is sooo good.  I could kick myself for not seeing her when we were at Coachella in 2010. {We were all "Florence who?"} Oh well, maybe next time.

Andrew thinks Mumford & Sons schould have won song of the year at the grammys. I think Adele deservedly won, but she didn't make it on my playlist because her music's too depressing. But 21 is a great album... if you're in the mood for a good sob-fest

Edward Sharpe is one strange band, but I really like their song, "Home." It feels Texas-ey.

I find myself humming FtP's "pumped up kicks" while teaching. (Not exactly kid friendly) so I might switch them out with something less offensive... perhaps "The Wall" by Pink Floyd :)

Maddie's favorite pick is the Black Keys because she likes all the whistling.

The rest of the songs are just filler, but no good playlist is complete without the Pixies and the Cure, and of course, Hall and Oates to fulfill my 80's obsession.

What is your favorite song right now?

Resolution #2

Organize my closet

I made good on my promise in yesterday's post and spent the better part of the evening cleaning out the closet. It is all for the best that there are no "before" photos. If this mess is the after, you can only imagine what it looked like before!

I have one word for y'all: OUCH
And I'm not just referring to the pain involved in trying to fit into my jeans that have mysteriously shrunk over the years. I also managed to bruise both my shins while moving random boxes and thus highly recommend taking a naproxen prior to embarking on any further organization projects.

The good news: I got rid of 4 tuff totes (sp) of clothing and accessories and can now work on resolution # 11 (the one about the yard sale) I have til Summer to complete that one.

I also found this little treasure tucked away in my closet: The bump it
The hair accessory for snooki wannabes and midgets everywhere.
I found that if I stacked two bump-its together and put on my highest pair of heels, I stood 5'5"
(the height of a normal short person!)
Look out Marge Simpson!
Just so everyone knows, Andrew does in fact have a portion of the closet.
(Waaaayyyy in the back!)

Spring Cleaning

Why is it so hard to part with stuff?

Not shopping this little month of February (minus a minor slip up at the Banana Republic outlet in San Marcos on Saturday; I found the cutest belt!) has caused me to take a good hard look at all the stuff I already have. And, more importantly, all of the stuff I don't really need. I am by definition a "packrat" (not hoarders status, but it's definitely in my DNA.)  And being a pack-rat means I keep everything... I only recently got rid of my VHS collection and portable cd player. For reals. I don't know why I like stuff so much, I guess it stems from always wanting to be prepared. Prepared for a natural disaster, prepared for cold weather, prepared for an awesome 80's party (that's where the vhs come in handy.)

But I'm discovering that stuff = stress... Why do I have all this junk? Where am I going to put that? Too much clutter! I'm ready to simplify and I'm starting in my closet with a little early spring cleaning. I'll let you know how it goes...

where there's a will

Our friend, and groomsman in our wedding, Will came to visit us this weekend from South Korea where he is teaching English. Our fellow transplanted San Diegan friends, Brenden and Carissa, came to visit too. So fun to be reunited! {hums the song, "reunited and it feels so good." You're welcome for having that stuck in your head the rest of the day.}

Our weekend included the usual sightseeing and consumption of mass quantities one would expect when visiting Texas.

 The Salt Lick in Driftwood

Thank you for coming to visit us!!! Will miss you!!!

**sidenote: as per new year's resolution #14, I learned a silly phrase in another language... "jin jja" {sp} means "really?!!!" in Korean and "assah" meanse "yes!!!" ala Napoleon Dynamite. Will taught me a couple other expressions, but none that I should WILLingly repeat :)

Tuesday, February 7, 2012

Well hello February!
You are quite the busy little month.
Here's a bit of what we've been up to:
 Getting ready for Valentine's Day

 Fun game night with friends from UTSA
Congratulations to Magda for her acceptance into UCLA's PhD program :)
 Superbowl party with friends

I gotta say: I don't like either team (SD Chargers fan, what what!) and didn't really care who won. But I definitely won at eating "New England (Patriots) Clam Chowder", "Ocho Cinco De Mayo chips and dip", and "New York (Giants) hot dogs." (Excellent job Katie and Jeremy!)

There were a couple good commercials too. I loved Betty White's cameo in The Voice promotion (not enough to actually watch The Voice though.)
My favorite was this one

The rest of the week was just spent working and mostly not shopping, as per my last post.
Boo hoo hoo.

Oh, I have also been playing a lot of Words with Friends on my kindle.

Did I mention I'm an undefeated champion? {toot toot - my horn}
If only I could apply that same fervor to tidying up around here.

I guess I'm still waiting for them to invent a housecleaning app.
*holds breath*
