The best thing about January

Besides it being my birthday month, January is also awesome because it is when the stores do crazy clearance sales! I may or may not have gone overboard at Target (ok 3 Target stores- they all have different merchandise, you know!) on my way home from work last night. And Ross and TJ Maxx :)

Kind of crazy colors, but for $8.98 each I bought everything they had in my size (6.5)
I also bought three shirts and some pajamas, but the shoes were the real highlight...
no pun intended, wowza those are bright!

30 new shoes is looking like the first thing I get to cross of my 30 before 30 list.
I would say that I'm surprised, but that would be a lie.

What I Wore

It's Wednesday and I'm linking up here to share what I wore this week...

Starting with HEARTS...
I am getting ready for Valentine's Day!
dress: ross ($12.99)      belt and necklace: F21
cardigan: gilly hicks      shoes: nine west

I am also ready for gloomy January to be over and for it to be Spring.
In my closet at 6am this dress looked pastel yellow.
In the light of day it looks like a taxi cab!
Not every outfit is a win :(

I am embracing the collar trend
I like the little button hole in the back.
And yes, I am rocking the sock bun.

Is winter over yet?
Maybe if I keep wearing these obnoxious bright colors the seasons will change faster.

Tattoosday

We recently discovered that Freebirds gives you free chips and queso on Tuesday if you show your tattoo.  Now I will never regret getting a tattoo. And also I'm kind of glad I got it on my upper back and not somewhere indecent :) 2011 was the year of ink... Andrew got one too. But they don't give you extra nachos for each tattoo, so we'll stick with one each for now.

Thoughts on Running

I HATE IT!!!

I'm thinking it would have been a lot more enjoyable bearable if I hadn't just eaten a bag of Doritos and a package of sour straws for dinner. Some things will never change.
Apparently my eating habits are one of those things.
A little over 5 miles in 45 minutes. Not too bad for someone who loathes running. But don't go expecting this to become a hobby.  If running 30 miles wasn't on my 30|30 list I don't think I would ever run again. No joke. I HATE RUNNING!

the post about purses

Purses make me happy. I collect them {along with a million other things... we've been over this: I'm a hoarder}.  I have a purse for every occasion - elegant dinner, long day at school, weekend trip to the beach, travel on a plane, quick trip to the store, you get the idea. Before we moved to Texas, when I really had a purse addiction, I had over 100 purses. I would go to the fashion district in LA with $500 and buy 20 knock off LV, Prada, Gucci, and Dior bags on a Saturday. Light bulb moment: THAT'S where all my money went! I sold most of them on Craigslist for $5. Guess that minor in Business didn't amount to much. Anyway, today I only have somewhere around 50 purses. (Not including wallets, clutches, vintage purses, or beach bags.) I was actually kind of bummed there weren't more purses, that means I got rid of A LOT. That also gives me incentive to go buy more. Ok maybe not.

Today (as I made it my 30|30 goal to do 30 posts in 30 days and am already running out of material) I thought I would share my favorite purses. The ones that survived the move across the country and get regular use.

First, everyone needs a basic black purse. Here are some of mine...

Upper: Coach (this is one of my favorite purses, I have it in white too! It holds SO much stuff!)  Lower: Steve Madden, Juicy Couture
Upper: Louis Vuitton, Chanel
Lower: Tory Burch, D&G
(None of these are authentic, but they're super fun)

Then You need a good metallic purse. All of these are from the Coach outlet.
The lower left one is my favorite purse right now, it was a Birthday gift from my mom.
She knows me best, we love all the same things!

Then you need a good neutral bag
and some small wallet size purses for running errands.
Upper: Coach
Lower: Tory Burch, LV, Jessica Simpson, Gucci, Nine West, Hilfiger
I keep these little guys in my larger purses for when I just need
a cell phone, a charge card, and a lip gloss.

Then you need a classic brown bag... never goes out of style
Upper: Fendi, Louis Vuitton
Lower: Gucci, Louis Vuitton
(all faux designer, but even combined they cost less than one real LV purse)

If you were going shopping today for a new purse, I would tell you to get a Coach one.
They are the best quality and get better with age.
Here's a few more...

Those are the purses I use the most often, but I have 20 more that fit in this crate and get used occasionally too.
I didn't take the time to photograph each of those. I feel silly enough already.

This is how I store my purses...
In a little closet on 2 hanging racks and on the shelf above.
Not too glamorous, but effective nonetheless.

Prehistoric Stonehenge

Disclaimer: *This post has nothing to do with dinosaurs or those big rock formations in England*

Prehistoric Stonehenge is a paint color.
It's the color of this dresser.

And everything else in my room...

Originally I painted all of our bedroom furniture this color to match the crown molding in our last apartment. Oh how I miss that beautiful molding. Stupid boring walls!
You can see a piece of the crown molding here. Also me and Ashley a couple Halloweens ago.

It's kind of a green greige (gray beige) color and it's only $16 for a gallon of it at Wal-Mart. I picked it up the same day I picked up all the stuff to paint my nails in my last post. Hindsight being what it is, I probably should not have done my furniture painting projects AFTER applying acrylic nails, but what's the fun in that?!

I touched up my old dressers and repainted the gray one below. I switched the bottom drawer out for baskets in the dresser on the left after the drawer broke. Furniture falling apart is a hazard of moving so much. But moving so much is the reason I won't invest in quality furniture. It's circular reasoning but it means I have more money to spend on shoes so it's all good :)

I wanted to incorporate more gray because it is my favorite home d├ęcor color right now, but it turned out too harsh when I tested it on this dresser. It looked like pewter.

I never do anything in moderation, so while I was waiting for the prehistoric Stonehenge paint projects to dry I also spray painted a bunch of random things a nice glossy white.

Now glossy white: the curtain rods in my bedroom, the legs on my lilac chair, lamp posts, mirrors, picture frames, vases, and planted pots.
Yeah, my house smells great right now! Well, I would imagine it does but I can't tell because I have a pounding headache from all the paint fumes.

Acrylics at Home

Disclaimer: The one and only time I went to a nail salon was the day before my wedding. I know nothing about nails. I'm just frugal and thought I would give this a try...

First I watched this video on youtube and it looked easy enough, so I went to Wal-mart and spent about $10 on supplies. {If it ends up being a disaster, at least it's a cheap one!}

Here's what I did:
I will say that I managed to cover my index finger in nail glue and got lazy about buffing the nails so they're not great. But for the 10 minutes it took start to finish, I call it a success. Sorry there are no pictures of the acrylic application. That stuff sets fast! It's best not to mangle with the camera at the same time. There are videos online that detail that part much better than I could.

I also painted my toe nails... not acrylic, just regular polish.  I love the Sally Hansen nail strips you stick on because I am a klutz when it comes to painting a straight line, but these make it possible. If you're in a bind scotch tape works too :)
Happy Weekend!

Vintage Suitcase Dog Bed

I was feeling a teensy bit crafty last night and attempted this super simple DIY dog bed for Maddie. Emphasis on the teensy bit crafty because it literally only took me 5 minutes to throw together and most of that time was spent trying to find my feather boa collection. I might go back and spruce this project up later {you know with my be-dazzler and a banner or something} but Maddie is more into laps than dog beds anyway, so we'll see.

Inspiration here and here

Look at me "up-cycling"
Stay tuned next week when I share my tips on turning garbage into art :)

3 Things

We will be arriving right after Mardi Gras and almost right after the Superbowl.
Hopefully everyone will have gone home and we'll have the whole city to ourselves :)

Andrew has never been to New Orleans and I've only been once.
My mom took me on a Caribbean cruise that left out of N.O. for my 20th Birthday. It was the best vacation EVER! (But I'm sure me and Hoagie Bear will have fun this time too.)

Surely there are more uses for this little taste of island paradise than just in coffee.
Tomorrow I may use it in place of milk in my cereal.
YOLO (btw I cringe when I see "you only live once" like that. I don't know why.) *cringing*

Also, that Starbucks tumbler right there is like no other. Andrew and I are in a silent war that is our daily race to see who gets up early enough each morning to use that coveted coffee carrier for the day. I usually win (if getting up at the butt crack of dawn is winning). It really is something special.
And I would know because I have a cabinet with 17 far less superior ones. #hoarder
I also hate improper uses of #'s. *cringing again*

Confession: I don't especially like any of these girls. Or Sean.
It's so weird, I don't know who to root for.
Oh well, first world problems!

What I Wore Wednesday

Happy Wednesday! I'm linking up with Lindsey at The Pleated Poppy to share this weeks wardrobe...

All jewelry: F21
All dresses and boots: Ross

I have been wearing those 3 jean jackets almost everyday because the weather can't decide if it's going to be in the 40's or the 70's. Silly winter in Texas!

It's all good though, because upon closer inspection of my closet, I do in fact have a jean jacket for every day of the week.

Tu Tu Tuesday

It's the 22nd and it's a Tuesday...

For some reason unbeknownst to me I could not locate 1 single tu tu in my collection of costumes. So I dug up this old tulle apron and made due. You can't tell in the picture, but it is covered in sequins. That is probably the only reason I haven't gotten rid of it. {Not the cutest apron in the box}

But to find that old apron I had to sort through all my other old stuff. But instead of calling it old stuff, I refer to it as vintage. Vintage sounds so much more valuable.

And inside that box of aprons is my collection of vintage gloves. Yes that is an odd thing to collect, but they're really cute and don't take up much space. Plus, who ya gonna call when attending a last minute tea party? That's right... glove-busters :)

Aren't the little hearts on the white gloves so fun and festive for V-day?! ... says the girl with 36 pairs of gloves. Oops.

My collection of vintage-y things doesn't end with accessories. My whole house is full of vintage treasures. Translation: cheap junk from the swap meet.

And given the choice, I almost always choose old over new.
Movies.
Red wine.
Furniture.
Architecture.
Jewelry.
Soup.
Books.
Artwork.
Cities.

It's a good thing I like old over new because I was really banking on this anti-aging cream and it isn't holding up its end of the bargain! Here's to getting old kicking and screaming gracefully!
